PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

The third type is an HEV. It is basically a gasoline vehicle with a little support from an electric motor. However, its batteries are charged by the engine and braking system instead of a plug. The batteries installed in it support the motor, which reduces the load on a gasoline engine. The drive becomes economical.

How Does an Electric Car Engine Work?

Well, there is no engine inside it but an electric motor. That motor gets energy from the batteries installed inside it. Once the batteries supply energy, the motor controls the electric drivetrain to move an EV. 

How Do Electric Cars Charge?

It is simple: You connect the charging port of an EV with the socket or charging station via a charging cord. This starts the charging process just like a cell phone. You will find different charging levels.

Charging Level 1

It is a basic level with a 120 V limit. Since it is a slow level, full charging takes around 22 to 40 hours. You will find an average 3-mile distance covered per hour of charging. It is normally used at home.

Charging Level 2

The next level is higher than level 1. It has a 240 V limit that takes around 2 or 3 hours to fully charge batteries. This level allows around 15 miles of coverage per hour of charging. You will find it at homes or public locations.

Charging Level 3 or Fast Charging

Then comes the fast charging level, which takes only 30 minutes or around 1.5 hours to fully charge batteries. An EV can cover around 200 miles per hour of charging. This level of station is found in public places.

The charger receives DC from the electric source, which is converted into AC by an inverter inside it. Then, the batteries supply power to the electric motor that controls an EV's drivetrain. The radiator inside it cools the motor to prevent overheating since the process is continuous. 

How Do Electric Car Batteries Work?

Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are installed in EVs. Their performance depends on the number and quality of batteries. When users connect their EVs to a charging station, the batteries absorb the energy through the inverter installed in them.
